Travis Rebels Athletic Training Department
"The team behind the team"
The Travis Rebels Athletic Training Department is dedicated to the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic-related injuries at Travis Early College High School. The Athletic Training Department has been a part of the fabric of Travis Early College High School Athletics since 1971.
When the department began, it was staffed by a rotation of athletic trainers, including Mike and Luann Patrick. Jim Price was the first permanent athletic trainer hired for Travis Early College High School in 1989. He dedicated his career to the students and families of Travis for 29 years.
In 2018, Travis hired Teresa Delgado to take over the reins from Doc Price. Coach Delgado entered the profession of athletic training through Mike Patrick (the same one who started the department at Travis) while she was in high school at James Bowie High School. She was also taught by Doc Price in high school. Coach Delgado comes from a Travis Rebel Family, as her mom and uncle attended Travis in the 70's. In 2024, Travis hired its 3rd-ever Athletic Trainer to join Coach Delgado, giving Travis 2 Athletic Trainers hired at the same time for the first time in its history. Greg Pendergast joined the department, and with his help, the department has expanded further, providing the highest standard of care for the athletes of Travis Early College High School.
What is an Athletic Trainer?
Athletic trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who render service or treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician, in accordance with their education, training and the state's statutes, rules and regulations. Athletic Trainers hold state licenses from the allied health medical boards of their state and some even hold national certifications to practice athletic training. Athletic Trainers work in many different settings including but not limited to secondary schools, colleges, clinics, hospitals, professional sports, military and even entertainment settings.
What does an Athletic Trainer Do?
Athletic trainers help prevent athletic-related injuries with the help of their coaches. They also treat all athletic-related injuries to the students under their care. They coordinate that care with doctors, physical therapists, orthopedic surgeons, and other medical professionals when appropriate. They are the first responders to most athletic-related injuries. If you have ever seen a televised sports event and a player got injured, they are the personnel who go on the field/court to care for that athlete. They also help facilitate rehabilitation of injuries, helping an athlete return to play. Athletic Trainers are also trained to help with athlete mental health, sports nutrition, sports psychology, and more.
